We’ve been researching the secrets of breast milk for 40 years. Our goal is to provide optimal nutrition today for a healthy future for infants and toddlers.

Nature can not be equalled — especially in the case of infant formula. Breast milk has always been and will always be the ideal baby food. That’s why a expert team of 400 scientisit from Danone Nutricia, the parent company of Milupa, conducts research on breast milk and optimal nutrition for infants and toddlers for us.

Milestones in high-quality baby food

With numerous patents and scientific publications: our breastmilk research sets the standard.

We contribute to the healthy development of infants with the development of patented nutrients in our follow on foods such as Prebiotics (GOS/FOS blend) and LCP Milupan.

We are continuously developing new, improved formulas for an optimal start in life. Our research has long played a pioneering role in the development and improvement of infant formulas. Early life nutrition was revolutionized in three major steps:

1968 — For the first time, Milupa launched an infant formula with an adapted protein that largely replicated the protein composition of breast milk under the name Aptamil.

1992 — For the first time, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs) were used in infant formulas by Milupa.

2002 — Milupa once again set a milestone in the ongoing development of baby food with the development of the patented fiber blend GOS/FOS (galacto-oligosaccharides/fructo-oligosaccharides). They have been included in the Aptamil infant formulas since 2003.

State-of-the-art technology in action

Unlocking the secrets of breastmilk needs cutting-edge technology. That’s why Milupa and its sister companies use complex MALDI mass spectrometry, in which tiny samples of breast milk are applied to a special metal plate and irradiated with a pulsed laser in a high vacuum, facilitating the precise identification and characterization of constituents of breast milk down to the sub-nanogram level.

Another trailblazing technology is used in the field of immune system stimulation. In recent years the intestines have become increasingly important to our research approaches in the areas of allergy and infection prevention. This is no surprise, as more than 70 percent of all of the body’s immune cells are found there. To gain a better understanding of the interaction of nutrition, enzymes and intestinal flora, our research center co-developed an artificial intestine, which facilitates detailed research on the effects of pro- or prebiotics in the intestines, for example.

Team success

The success of our methods is demonstrated by numerous pre-clinical and clinical studies. However, the success of the research depends first and foremost on the people who conduct it. To achieve optimal results, our research is carried out by interdisciplinary teams of biologists, nutritional scientists, food chemists and physicians.

Globally recognised research standards

The quality of our researchers is clearly demonstrated by the recognition of other scientists. Our researchers have published important papers in many renowned scientific journals in recent years.

Our innovation results are also impressive: for example, several dozen of the results of our research and development work are successfully patented every year.

It will never be possible to reproduce the incomparable breast milk in its entirety. But we do everything to ensure that infants who are not breast-fed receive healthy, optimal nutrition today, to ensure that they thrive tomorrow. That’s what our researchers work for – and that’s what millions of children, who found a healthy start in life with our products over the past several decades, represent.
